I get quite a few questions about my pixel art, so I thought I’d answer a few of the more frequent ones here !

Q : What programs do you recommend for pixel art ?
Raster Art programs are what you want to use ideally. GIMP is an excellent free program, whilst Fireworks is good if you can afford it. If you have an IPhone / IPad, check out an app called “Sprite Something”. It costs $5, but it allows you to doodle small things on the go.

Q: Do you have any tips ?
A: Sure thing !
- Keep it simple
You’ve only got a limited amount of space to try and pixelate a character, so you’ve got to economise ! Big recognisable details are what you should aim to include, as those are what people recognise most.
- Use Shading
Shading is your best friend. If you want to give a 3D look, darken the colours along the edge slightly, and lighten them on the opposite edge. Has the character got ridges or indents on their armour ? Use a darker shade of the standard colour.
-Shapes
Pixels are square. Circles aren’t. You can however create “Round Edges” by drawing a square and removing the corner blocks. Very useful when trying to replicate odd shapes.

Q: How much does it cost to request a character from you !
A: If you just want to suggest something for me to make for my blog, it’s FREE ! However, if you want to request a character for something else it’s best to email me the exact details. Most likely it will be a special “commission”, and we’ll have to work out the details.

Q: If I want to commission something from you, how would I go about that ?

The price of a commission can vary, depending on what it is and how long it takes. Don’t be afraid to ask !

Q: Do you mind if I use some of your artwork for my blog / art project inspiration ?
A: I’d prefer if you emailed me first, and let me know what it is you are going to be doing. But as long as you credit me properly, than I have no problem !

Q: Have you got a shop where I can buy some of your stuff ?
A: Sure ! Click the “PixelBlock’s Pixelshop” link in the top right, and you’ll be taken to my Society6 store. If you want to request a special print that isn’t yet available, contact me !
